accept today navy flight school. she became the navy's first female helicopter pilot and between 1975 and 1978 she was a plaintiff in a lawsuit that successfully challenged the restriction on women flying and serving at least temporarily aboard noncombat ships. she's remained politically active on behalf of women in the military thought her life -- throughout her life. next to her is colonel martha mcsally. she was one of the first seven women in the air force selected for combat aircraft cockpit when that restriction fell. as an a-10 thunderbolt pilot, she was the first american woman to fly into combat, and she completed multiple deployments associated with operations southern watch, enduring freedom and iraqi freedom. she was the first woman in u.s. history to command a combat aviation unit, and she did so during active combat. in recognition of her leadership and her performance, she received a bronze star and multiple air medals. she's continued to have an illustrious military and now postmilitary career. next to her is karen davis, retired left tent from the canadian forces. i'm

in the united states navy. he served in vietnam, where pretty famously he was awarded three purple hearts and a silver star and a bronze star. before he was the senator from the great state of texas, before he was a lawyer, ted cruz, on the other hand, went to princeton, and then went to harvard law school, where he did very well in school. it was therefore pretty breathtaking when senator ted cruz voiced his opposition to both senator kerry's nomination at the state department and to the nomination of chuck hagel to run the defense department. chuck hagel received two purple hearts in vietnam and walks around every day with shrapnel in his chest. it was pretty remarkable when we heard the reason why senator ted cruz says that those two wounded combat veterans are not going to get his vote in the senate. >> we've got two pending nominations, john kerry, chuck hagel. both of whom are very prominently anti-us. less than ardent fans of the u.s. military. >> they don't love the military. not like he does. he is the junior senator from texas. there are no medals for a declaration like that, bu

not by a drone, but by a navy s.e.a.l. team was of course the killing of osama bin laden in his compound in pakistan. the highest professional drone strike killing was this guy, anwar al awlaki. he was born in new mexico and killed in yemen. but between those very high profile killings, there have been dozens and dozens, ultimately hundreds of drone strikes under president obama, most of them mostly unnoticed in the news. tonight monday of president obama's inauguration, the first day president obama outlined this wide ranging liberal agenda for his second term, that same day there was a drone strike in yemen. and that drone strike on inauguration day followed drone strikes in yemen on both days of the weekend that preceded inauguration day. so we had drone strikes on saturday and on sunday and on monday, the monday the president was sworn in. it doesn't really make the news. one of the most unusual things about drone strikes for us as citizens in a country that does this is that for so long our country would not admit that we did them, even when we all knew that we did. that was the cas

delivered distinguished service to his country in the navy and the democratic party and the people of this country as the 2004 presidential nominee for the democratic party. he is really a brilliant man. he was a debater at yale and won awards for his skilled oratory. before he graduated college, he was a local critic of the vietnam war. upon graduation, senator kerry volunteered to serve in the united states navy, and serve he did. later he said, "did i it because it was the right thing to do." senator kerry learned the value of service at home. his father was a foreign service officer. his mother a nurse during world war ii. he served two tours as a navy lieutenant in the jungles and rivers in vietnam. he was awarded the silver star for his gallantry, a bronze star for valor also, and three purple hearts. but even after his service in the war, his opposition continued. on april 22, 1971, senator kerry became the first vietnam veteran to testify before congress about the war, when he appeared before the senate foreign relations committee, which was chaired by the famous senator fu
